Demonologists

If you are truly frightened in your home, leave immediately. Stay with friends or family while you find out what’s really going on in your house.

When someone is afraid, there may be a good reason for it.  Do not take chances.  Get away from the danger right now.

If it turns out to be something very normal (though odd), you can laugh about it later.

Your safety — and the safety of your family — must be your highest priority.

Get help

If you are concerned that you’re being tormented by a devils and demons, or an evil entity, you’ll need a specialist.

Do not rely on a group of amateur ghost hunters who have little or no professional experience with dangerous entities.  That can make the situation worse, and put even more people at risk.

You need someone with more expertise than a class in  “Demonology 101.”  This isn’t a subject to treat lightly.

It’s a spiritual matter

Ghosts, demons, devils and evil entities are spirits. Consult someone who has experience in spiritual matters.  In extreme cases, spiritual warfare may be necessary.

Start by talking with someone who is a full-time religious minister or priest, whether you go to that church or not (and whether you believe in Deity or not.)

There are two reasons for this.

  1. They’ve probably had experience with hauntings in the past, and at least know where to start.  If they have no experience in this area, they probably know someone reliable who can help you.
  2. The ghost in your home — if it is simply a ghost — probably lived at a time when ministers and priests were even more respected than they are now.  Sometimes, that’s the level of authority necessary to make contact with a ghost and provide help.

If you aren’t a practicing member of any religion, start with a local Catholic or Episcopal church.  In my experience, they have the most uniform, documented approach to demons and evil entities.  You don’t have to be a member, or even believe in that church.

The person may visit your home, and perhaps bless the house.  That can reduce some or all of the negative energy.

Remember, Catholic churches rarely approve exorcisms without significant documentation and study, first.   Even with that time-consuming process, exorcisms are very unusual.

Demonic possession

In most cases, the demon’s influence is gradual.  Generally, no one is suddenly possessed by a demon.  The evil spirit doesn’t — out of nowhere — take control of the person’s body or mind.

There are many steps that can lead to that, but they usually occur gradually.

It’s important to address those issues before possession becomes a possibility.

Demonologists

If you find no help in your community and the problem is severe, I recommend the following four well-respected demonologists.

(They’re listed in the order that I met them.  I’ve known John Zaffis for about ten years, maybe more.)

John Zaffis
Paranormal Research Society of New England

Father Andrew Calder
Dublin, Georgia

Carl & Keith Johnson
New England Anomalies Research & Investigation

Remember, demonologists are experts in demons and evil entities. Many of them work with exorcists, as part of a team.

However, before deciding that you need an exorcism, it’s important to consult a respected demonologist.

Other resources

For more information about what’s going on in your home, especially if it’s a ghost, see my book, Is My House Haunted? (also available at Amazon.com)

To understand demons, read Rosemary Ellen Guiley’s book, The Encyclopedia of Demons and Demonology.

Poltergeists

If you’re dealing with something that’s a poltergeist — not a demon — you may need a specialist in that field.

I’ve worked with Pete Haviland of Lone Star Spirits.  He understands the personal and paranormal dynamics that can create a poltergeist problem.

I’m sure there are other excellent professionals in the fields of demonology and poltergeists.  However, I usually list only those I’ve met and worked with, with good results.
